Congratulations on getting your new tattoo! Now that you have some fresh ink, it's important to take care of it properly, so it can heal well and look great for years to come. Here's what you need to know about aftercare.
plastic food grade foil
paper kitchen towels
pH-neutral soap (e.g. Hypoallergenic Sanex, Gray Soap)
tattoo ointment for healing process (I recommend Hustle Butter Deluxe or Bepanthen Tattoo)
paper tape
access to clean tap water
SPF50 for after the healing process
Utmost Important:
Always wash your hands before washing and lubricating your tattoo or use disposable gloves!!!
Avoid wearing tight clothing over your tattoo during the healing process. Loose, breathable clothing is the best.
Avoid sports for 3–4 days and excessive sweating.
Some itchiness and skin peeling off are part of the healing process, but resist the urge to scratch or pick, as this can cause scarring or damage the tattoo and skin. Tap your tattoo gently instead of scratching.
Avoid saunas, steamy hot showers, soaking your tattoo in bath, swimming pools and open wild waters for 4 weeks.
Avoid exposing your new tattoo to sunlight or tanning beds for 4 weeks, if necessary cover it with clothing or with breathable material bandage till you can start using SPF50 once it's healed.
Be mindful of your tattoo when engaging in activities that could cause friction, irritation or damage, as during healing as long-term too!
Avoid products with alcohol or peroxide, as they can dry out your skin and slow healing—stick to fragrance-free options to prevent irritation.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This will help your skin stay moisturized and promote healing.
Long term - keep your skin moisturized and protected from strong exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Use that SPF 50, smear it on your ink!
Day 1–2: Intensive care phase
Wash your tattoo 3 times a day with lukewarm water and mild, pH-neutral soap. Avoid hot water over your fresh tattoo! After washing in lukewarm water, rinse it briefly with cold water instead. Avoid directing water straight onto your tattoo—pour it gently with your hand or let it flow from above.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
Let it air out for 5–10 minutes after drying. It will help your skin to breathe and calm.
Apply a thin layer of tattoo ointment after airing. Don’t just put it on the surface, rub it gently in.
Re-wrap your tattoo with fresh plastic food-grade foil after each cleaning cycle. Don’t wrap it too tightly—the foil should fully cover the tattoo without applying excessive pressure, so it can ooze out naturally.
Keep the wrap on for a maximum of 4 hours at a time during the day.
At night, repeat the full cleaning cycle before bed, then wrap it again and sleep with the bandage on. In the morning, start your day with a fresh cleaning cycle.
Keep an eye on your tattoo each time you change the bandage. If there's still a lot of fluid or ink coming out, clean it again and rewrap. Big or colorful pieces often take longer to settle, but smaller tattoos might be okay to leave unwrapped after just one day. When it's time to go without the foil wrapping, let your tattoo breathe for 30–60 minutes, then apply a light layer of ointment.
Be mindful of exposing your tattoo to dirty things and environments
Day 3–14: Healing and transition phase
Wash your tattoo 2–3 times a day using lukewarm water and mild, pH-neutral soap.
Dry with paper towels and let it air out for 5–10 minutes after each wash.
Apply a fine layer of ointment 2–3 times a day—especially after cleaning. It’s okay if your tattoo dries a little between applications, just don’t let it get mummified.
Be mindful of exposing your tattoo to dirty things and environments
Day 15–28: Finishing Healing
Wash 1–2 times daily with lukewarm water and mild soap.
Dry gently with a soft, clean towel.
Let the tattoo breathe for 5–10 minutes after drying.
Apply a fine layer of ointment 1–3 times a day
Infection: If you don't follow proper aftercare instructions, your tattoo may become infected. Signs of infection include excessive redness, swelling, or discharge.
If you suspect an infection, contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional right away.
Allergic reaction: Some people may have an allergic reaction to tattoo ink or aftercare products.
If you experience excessive itching, swelling, or a rash, stop using the product and contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional right away.
Fading or discoloration: Improper aftercare can speed up your tattoo to fade, change color or distort over time. Follow the healing process instructions carefully and long term skin care to ensure your tattoo is given the best possible conditions during and after healing.
